About Fly Ash Bricks

Fly Ash Bricks

Fly ash bricks are hi-tech, well-improved quality bricks used for construction of brick masonry structures. They are a superior replacement for normal clay bricks with better properties, dimensional accuracy, and environmental benefits.

Composition of Fly Ash Bricks
  • ✔ Fly Ash (main ingredient from coal power plants)
  • ✔ Cement
  • ✔ Sand
  • ✔ Water
  • ✔ Gypsum / Lime (in some mixes)
Sources of Fly Ash

72% of India's power plants are coal-based, generating nearly 40 million tons of fly ash annually. Fly ash is separated using cyclone converters and recycled into bricks.

Nature of Pollution Caused by Fly Ash

Fly ash causes severe air and water pollution and occupies large land areas for disposal. Proper utilization in bricks helps protect the environment and reduces landfill needs.

Why Choose Fly Ash Bricks?
  • ✔ Stronger and more uniform than clay bricks
  • ✔ 28% lighter
  • ✔ Lower water absorption and wastage
  • ✔ Eco-friendly – conserves soil, reduces CO₂ emissions
  • ✔ Better dimensional stability and plaster savings

Manufacture of Fly Ash Bricks

Fly ash bricks are a slow-setting pozzolana cement mix. Fly ash (burnt clay particles) is mixed with hydrated lime, gypsum, cement, and sand. The mixture is pressed at low pressure (~350 kg/sq inch) in a hydraulic machine for high strength.

Flowchart / Process Steps:

  • Mixing of Fly ash with cement, sand, and water
  • Pouring of mortar into the moulds
  • Drying in atmospheric temperature
  • Curing for a period of 28 days
  • Removing from the moulds → Ready Fly Ash Bricks

Advanced methods include compression at 28 MPa, steam curing at 66°C for 24 hours, and use of air entrainment agents.

Benefits of Fly Ash Bricks for Environment

Fly ash bricks production saves energy and reduces CO₂ emissions significantly compared to clay bricks (which consume ~200 tons coal per million bricks and emit ~270 tons CO₂). Using fly ash qualifies under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) per Kyoto Protocol.

Fly Ash Bricks vs Clay Bricks

Properties Red Bricks / Clay Bricks Fly Ash Bricks Remarks
Density 1600-1750 kg/m³ 1700-1850 kg/m³ Higher load bearing
Compressive strength 30-35 kg/cm² 90-100 kg/cm² Higher load bearing
Absorption 15-25% 10-14% Less dampness
Dimensional stability Very low tolerance High tolerance Saving in mortar up to 25%
Wastage during transit Up to 10% Less than 2% Saving in cost up to 8%
Plastering Thickness vary on both sides Even on both sides Saving in plaster up to 15%

Fly ash bricks are stronger, lighter (28% less weight), have ~1% wastage vs 10% in clay, and offer major environmental protection.
